Build a fantasy scene around a character
Fantasy works better when the world has a few clear rules. Choose one of our character scenarios or create a character with a setting of your own.

Start with the rules that matter now
Explain the location, the immediate problem, and one limit on what the characters can do. You do not need a complete history of the world before the first exchange.
For example: The city gates close at dusk. Neither of us can cross the river after dark, and the messenger has not arrived. That gives the scene a reason to move.
Give the character a reason to care
A title such as mage, guard, or explorer describes a role. A personal motive explains how that character might respond: a promise they made, something they are protecting, or a mistake they want to correct.
Write those details into the background when creating your own character. Use the greeting to show the motive through an action or a question.
Keep invented names consistent
Repeat the spelling of places and people when they become important. For longer scenes, recap the current location, the immediate goal, and any secret that has not yet been revealed.
